Rape Culture
In order to describe the "Consent is Sexy" campaign, an understanding of rape culture is needed. Rape culture is a term coined by feminists in the 1970's, and explains ways in which rape has been normalized in society. This includes victim blaming, where the person who was assaulted is blamed instead of the assaulter, sexual objectification, where a person is treated as an object only for sexual desire, and also the lack of education of instances of sexual assaults or how to prevent it.
Sexual Assault is a serious issue that has been a problem for decades. It occurs anytime that someone is forced to engage in a sexual act without their consent. This can mean when someone is coerced, pressured, threatened, or even unconscious. It can happen to anyone, regardless of gender, race, or sexuality.
