Artist Statement
For my response to a rhetorical situation, I decided to respond to a piece of rhetoric that I see all over OSU campus that I do not agree with, the “Consent is Sexy” posters. For this project, I intended to not only inform people, but also persuade them that these posters are inappropriate. I start by using logos to explain rape culture, as well as describe the campaign and posters. However, I heavily rely on pathos, using emotional appeal in order to convince my audience. My audience for this project is mostly OSU students, as the posters are used on OSU campus, but it can also apply to anyone who uses the “Consent is Sexy” campaign. This influenced my project, as I shared links to OSU pages, as well as explain the campaign as it is used on campus.
I decided to use Weebly, a website that helps others create a website using their domain. I have used this website multiple times in the past, and it always helps me create a professional looking project. The pages help me sort out my argument into defined sections, and the use of buttons allow me to control the order in which my audience reads it. Weebly also allows me to use a large amount of visual media, such as images and videos that help impact my rhetoric without getting in the way. I decided to use a dark background with light font, as it creates a dark atmosphere, which I wanted for my project. My topic is very sensitive and serious, so light vibrant colours would not be appropriate. There were many other widgets that I could have used that Weebly provides, such as polls and comments, which would allow me to receive feedback from my audience. However, I did not add these to my project, as I feel my audience would not have been big enough for me to use them effectively. If my website had gone viral, with many people visiting it every day, I would have added the feature.
I was first thinking of doing something completely different for my project. I considered looking at how women are portrayed in the media, and thinking of ways to combat that issue. However, after talking to one of my group members for the Wikipedia page, I found out that she was doing this particular topic. I decided to try something else instead, and ended up doing it on what I have today. I had always intended on using Weebly in order to create a website, so my vision on what media to use had not changed. Since I had used it in the past, I did not need to learn any new skills to create my project. I also read a lot of others opinions, mostly on Tumblr, which I also included in my project. I would like to have added a “Further reading” page at the end, but most of the things that I read were sentence long text posts. I feel like it would have been a pain on me having to link every single post, as well as the audience for having to read so many, so I did not include that at the end.
Also, please enjoy this slideshow of cats and dogs which I refuse to delete, as it is so cute.
